Following their masterpiece Lulu, Trip Shakespeare were dropped from A&M and chose to call it a day, but decided to cut the EP Volt for Clean, the Minneapolis label who gave them their start four years earlier, as a final send-off. Volt is a tip of the hat to both Shakespeare's fans and the group's influences as they run through songs by Nick Lowe, Thunderclap Newman, Big Star, The Zombies, Hüsker Dü, and Neil Young.
