Album Review

This is the second volume of Davy Jones' ongoing audio history. This CD covers his solo career from 1971 through to 1979. As with Just for the Record, Vol. 1, Jones was unable to access rights to the material released on his one solo release during the 1970s (1971's Davy Jones), so he resorted to using demos, outtakes, and acetates. As a history, Jones misses such material, such as his role in the London production of The Point (of which a soundtrack was released also featuring Micky Dolenz). His involvement with the semi-reunion with Tommy Boyce, Bobby Hart, and Dolenz is noted, but not represented by any music. That said, this particular CD is considerably better than the previous release. The sound quality is far superior and the material chosen is much better. In fact, his take on McCartney's "Man We Was Lonely" is quite good and the alternative mix of his solo hit "Rainy Jane" is actually better than the original version. His vocals are stronger here and the music has a level of energy not found on 1971's Davy Jones. But, once again, this CD would have benefited with some editing. The CD is far too long (close to 79 minutes) and some of the material is just not interesting. Fans will no doubt enjoy this CD and it does offer an interesting glimpse into Jones' musical activity during the 1970s.
