Album Review

Quickspace Supo Spot combines all of Quickspace's early singles, B-sides and Peel sessions and documents the evolution of the group's sound, from their debut single, the overdrive-drenched "Quickspace Happy Song #1" to vast, droning epics like "Friend," "Extraplus" and "Exemplary Swishy." Each track contains seeds of the driven keyboard and guitar grooves, creative arrangements and unpretentious lyrics that became Quickspace's trademark approach to making music.
At its best, such as on "Do It My Own Way," which incoroporates tin whistles, violin and shouted boy-girl vocals, Quickspace Supo Spot sounds spontaneous and exciting. At its worst, on songs like "Unique Slippy" and "The Whiff n' Spoof Song," it's just goofy. Too scattered to be a starting point for Quickspace, listening to the band get its musical footing is especially entertaining for completists and anyone fond of lo-fi drone-rock in general.
