Album Review

Easily one of the most important voices in the history of soul music, Sam Cooke left behind a mountainous wealth of gorgeous tunes, ranging from early gospel with the Soul Stirrers to blazing live albums blurring the lines between soul and ragged rock & roll. This Best of Sam Cooke collection represents the singer's highest charting pop crossover singles and includes most of his best-known hits. Chart-toppers like "Twistin' the Night Away," "Only Sixteen," and the crooned smash "You Send Me" are included in this 14-track compilation, as well as some material from later in Cooke's tragically short career, like the beautifully lamenting "Bring It on Home to Me" and "Nothing Can Change This Love." The one standout inclusion is an alternate version of Cooke's lonely-hearted hit "Another Saturday Night," not incredibly different from the better-known version, but including studio chatter at the beginning of the song.
