Jim Galloway, a native of Scotland who has long since settled in Canada, is joined by fellow Canadians
Don Thompson on bass, and drummer Terry Clarke, along with visiting American pianist
Jay McShann for this pair of 1981 studio dates recorded in Toronto.
Galloway, who plays several members of the reed family with equal chops, is heard exclusively on an antique curved soprano sax throughout both sessions. The musicians sound like old friends who effortlessly tackle this set of mostly well-trod standards, which isn't surprising since
Thompson and Clarke have been frequent collaborators on numerous recordings, especially straight-ahead sessions taped in Canada. The presence of
McShann gives a bluesy flavor to the music, with a gently swinging "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams," and
Duke Ellington's infrequently performed "Black Butterfly" being especially noteworthy. Although this LP is no longer available as an individual release, all nine tracks have been reissued on
Galloway's two-CD compilation
Music Is My Life.
